Marybeth and Kathe Get The Lay of The Ranch.

This is really about Day 1 which was the 16th.  Sometimes we write on the day after.

We hope that's ok.  We do want to keep the timeline in good order!

So....Day 1 was slow and easy.  No rushing.

Kathe and my Mom went out to meet the hound dogs, who stay in a penned area filled with trees and bushes (they have indoor kennels for the nights).

They are Rosie and Frankie and boy do they "sound the horn" so to speak, at any given moment that something comes close by, e.g. other dogs, cats, birds, people, the wind.....

The penned area that Rosie and Frankie spend time in, is right next to the horse corral where there are ten horses standing around.

Seven of these horses are owned by the Smith family, the other three are boarders.

Horses do a lot of standing.

Tanya was saying something about horses and their hooves being connected to their hearts and blood flow.

Not sure if I have that right but my Mom will certainly look further into this.

My Mom's way with horses, since working with the Seniors back home, is to stay quiet and let the horse(s) sense her energy, and understand that no "flight" is necessary because she's not a threat.

By the way, a horse's reaction time is less than a second!!! Yikes!!

My Mom could tell that each horse had an eye on her, even though a fence separated them.

A couple of the horses came right to the fence.

My Mom didn't touch them, she just let them experience her at close range.

Kathe on the other hand was chatting with the horses and I think she was touching their noses.

Her way is not my Mom's but they both enjoyed being in the horses' presence.

My Mom didn't know that Kathe seems to have a much longer experience with horses.

And, as a matter of fact, when Kathe was a child, she loved horses so much that she wanted to BE a horse!

Well, I know for sure that Kathe never did become a horse but her love of them did continue through adulthood.

At one point as an adult, she had an experience with a horse that opened her eyes to the strength, will and power of how horses are.

She was riding a horse with a friend who owned her own horse and the horse that Kathe was riding got "spooked" and took off at breakneck speed!

When the flash of "spookedness" ended, so did Kathe's desire to ever ride a horse again.

And that was that.

So here we are, faced with many horses, right in front of us.

We will see just how engaged these two pals become with these beautiful creatures.

I'll be sure to let you know!

I'm adding a couple of other photos of the ranch.

And by the way, the house at the top of the blog is the main house of the Smith Family Ranch.
