Mija, the Official Carson Valley Horse!

October 10, 2024 Mija, the Official Carson Valley Horse!

October 10, 20245 min read

Today is the day.

Mija, one of my Mom's senior horses, is getting a final visit from the Vet. She will be euthanized.  She is 35 years of age, the equivalent of 95 in human years.

Mija was the Official Carson Valley Horse in her youth; she was a show horse and lesson horse. And a true beauty.  She has been well-loved.

My Mom has been trying to mentally and emotionally prepare for this day for a while. I can't say how she's been doing this other than thinking about Mija and crying about her too.

My Mom found out this week that a date with the Vet had been scheduled. My Mom wasn't ready for this news even though Kristen, Mija's Mom, had talked about it.

But this week Mija could not get up from the ground, twice. Mija had to be physically lifted up to her feet.  I've mentioned before that Mija has a really bad left front knee that is severely arthritic.

At my Mom's last grooming session with the seniors, my Mom told Kristen that Mija's knee was bigger than ever. I think it looked like Saturn, kind of jutting out and large.

Gosh it must have been painful (she was on medication for it).

And last time Mija had limped over to my Mom.  It looked bad.

Mike the ranch hand told my Mom that a horse uses its two front legs to lift itself from a sitting position once on the ground.

For Mija, that would have been impossible, she no strength in that left leg.

The day of the limping, Mija did have strength enough to kick Scooter, the younger senior, in the leg using one of her back legs!  It was impressive.

She did not want Scooter to interfere with my Mom's grooming of her.

Yesterday when my Mom was there, Mija looked in worse shape.

It seemed she didn't want to put much pressure on that knee, at all.

My Mom groomed Mija with great care and love, telling her how beautiful she is.

A couple of times, my Mom leaned into Mija's side, kind of hugging her for a while.

My Mom said she felt Mija leaned into those hugs.

My Mom didn't let that go on for too long because she didn't want Mija to fall over, if that was possible.

When my Mom was finished with both Mija and Scooter, she gave them both carrots.

My Mom had also brought some lavender oil for Mija. She thought that it would be soothing for Mija.  Mija sniffed the oil, she seemed to like it.

So, that was the last time that my Mom groomed Mija and the last time she saw her.

My Mom is crying as she is typing this.

Here are some photos of Mija on the day before her final day:

Both of Mija's knees didn't look so great but her left knee was worse

Beautiful Mija, Mom's sister Robin said Mija looked tired, we think so too

We're hoping you're beginning to love horses as much as we do.  Thanks for reading!
