I'm sorry to deliver the very sad news that Maxie, my Mom's 40 year old senior groomee, has passed.
My Mom got the news at the beginning of the week.
He apparently had a heart attack.
A couple of weeks ago, Max was having a pretty steady nosebleed.
We certainly have no idea if these are related, but we do know that a 40 year old horse (110.5 in human years) has got to be one strong horse to live that long.
And he was strong, not that my Mom ever experienced his strength in a kicking or pushing way, she could tell from the size of his legs, that he was super strong!
My Mom's friend John, who visited Max with my Mom, can actually attest to the strength of a number of head butts!
Yep, Max butted John right out of the paddock!
He obviously did not want John present while my Mom's full focus was on Max.
My Mom groomed Max, spoke to him quietly, massaged his muscles and placed her hand on his forehead for long periods of time.
My Mom always felt that there was a lot of life lived in this beautiful boy.
She knew for sure that Max was a show horse at one time, at least 10 or so years ago, which is still very impressive.
Teagan is the young girl in the photos I'll share.
She rode Max and it's pretty clear that she and Max won some championships together.
Max a Champion? You bet!
Teagan and Max, a beautiful team
A lot of mutual respect going on here
My Mom is very sad that she won't be grooming Max on Sundays anymore.
He was always first.
She had a lot of respect for him.
Even when Max, Mija and Scooter lived in the same paddock, my Mom always went to Max first.
The other horses didn't dare try to push their way to the front of the line.
Max was the King of their group.
In the early summer, Max would almost dance around my Mom as she moved from one side of him to another.
He followed her movements.
My Mom loved this so much.
She thought it was incredibly magical to have this huge animal following her lead.
My Mom now thinks that Max is her "power animal" or spirit animal.
She wants to continue to connect with him even after death.
A crescent moon, a symbol of hope and limitless potential
In the animal communication course, with Penelope Smith, (virtually, with 300+ people from all over the world), she has learned that we can even telepathically communicate with beings who have passed.
My Mom says she's going to see if Max can help around the house with Onyx.
The other night, my Mom was imagining Max resting on the floor in her bedroom, kind of like a guardian of sorts.
In the night my Mom felt Onyx come up on the bed where she stayed the whole night!
I'm not sure what my Mom feels about that, other than good, but I think Onyx didn't want to be out done by Max!
Ah Ha!
Now that makes sense!
We'll see how things progress.
I'll be sure to let you know.
And as my Mom's friend John said when he heard that Max had passed:
"Long Live Max!"
Much Love and gratitude for your support of our stories and animal rescue!
