On Sunday after the Pescadero adventure, it was time to see the horses at the Sheridan Creek ranch.
My Mom says that when she pulls up, it's like the Good Humor ice cream truck coming on the block in New Jersey.
The horses come to the fences and the treats' session begins!
At the top of this post is a photo of little, sort of white, Steel, he's a Senior, not one of my Mom's yet, but soon we think.
No treats for him yet because my Mom doesn't know enough about him and what diet restrictions he may have.
This next photo is of Chief and Calvin.
Chief is one of my Mom's newest Seniors.
Calvin (to the left) is Chief's neighbor.
I've included this photo to show you that horses really do lie on the ground for a nap or snooze.
I think when my Mom first saw a horse lying on the ground (and it happened to be a Senior), she thought the horse was dead!
She was wrong because soon the horse popped his head up!
It might actually have been Max, who was the oldest of the Senior crowd (now deceased).
I wrote a post about him (December 6, 2024 Long Live Max the King!)
So, if you've never seen a horse on the ground, here are 2 of them resting along side one another.
Calvin and Chief
My Mom has read that generally, horses will lie down for about 2 hours a day.
Geez, that seems like a really long time to be standing but apparently, they can sleep standing as well.
Actually, my Mom has read that they are resting their legs because they've locked their joints in place.
That is immensely cool.
Here's another resting horse, this is Harmony, Linda's horse.
Sunday morning "Harmony"zing
These photos were taken Sunday morning, so we think it's the way Sunday mornings are.....leisurely.
It's also my Mom's understanding that horses take turns resting, so that someone (a herd member), is always on the lookout for potential threats, of any kind.
Horses are herd animals so they rely on their "community" members, to help sustain them.
By the way, my Mom didn't march right over to the "nappers", to offer them carrots or "Barn Bites", she let them rest and went to see the other horses.
She went back later to see them.
On the way to see River, Echo's Mom, (Echo is away at sleep away "yearling" camp, if you'll remember), my Mom saw this gorgeous horse.
My Mom doesn't know this horse, yet, but had to take a photo because of these lovely ribbons on the braids of the mane.
Quite a statement
And here is momma River.
I'm sure she can't wait to have Echo back from camp!
This River runs through our hearts
Selene lives next to River.
She's another lovely horse, privately owned and well-cared for.
The pristine Selene
Geez, you'd think I'd have more adjectives to describe the horses, besides "pretty", "beautiful" and "gorgeous".
I'll have to work on that but frankly, let's call it like it is!
Oh, and "lovely", or "handsome"!
Taking a break from the horses for a minute, here are some photos of the views on the way to the ranch.
My Mom actually got out of the car for these.
Now this character is Balthazar, I've talked about him before.
He's privately owned, but we think is not paid much attention to by his owner (not positive but he sure acts it).
He's an attention grabber, not only because of his beauty,
but because he kind of demands it.
He's pretty tricky with his lips and is always fiddling with the chain that locks his paddock.
That chain happens to lock Chief's paddock too, so it's quite the trick for my Mom to enter Chief's paddock for grooming.
She actually has to climb the fence and swing her leg over, to get in.
And...that's with nosybody Balthazar and his big head and nose trying to sniff and nibble at her.
My Mom's taking yoga with Mallory now, so she's getting pretty good at that swinging the leg part.
So, Balthazar is a rascal, but we really do love him.
My Mom tries to brush him a little, over the fence, when she's in Chief's paddock.
He doesn't really let her do that but he does let her rub his forehead and muzzle.
This week he grabbed my Mom's "curry" brush (a hard plastic brush that removes dirt and hair).
My Mom told me that she wondered at the time, if she would really be able to take that brush from Balthazar's grasp.
Not sure about the physics here but my Mom was thinking, 2000 lb. horse vs. 110 lb. woman.....hmm.
So then my Mom used both hands and retrieved it!
He was just playing and my Mom loved it.
Here are 2 photos of Balthazar:
Physics problem
We do love this guy
Next is Lindsey's Whitfield.
He's a yearling and growing by leaps and bounds.
Lindsey thinks he'll be about 16 "hands", (in horse lingo), based on a measurement that she took, from the top of his hoof to the middle of his knee.
For Whitfield, that measured 16 inches, thus, 16 "hands".
The "hands" measurement is that one "hand" is equal to 4 inches.
This measurement is taken from the ground to the "withers", which is the highest point of the horse's back.
All of this to say that Whitfield is going to be a good-sized boy.
We love watching him grow.
Whitfield, he stands like a good boy, don't you think?
Camparo is privately owned and actually is Echo, the yearling's father.
He apparently has an impressive pedigree and/or horse world recognition, that my Mom isn't fully aware of.
And, no treats for him according to other horse people on the ranch.
But, in this photo, Camparo is watching my Mom with Vincento, who lives a few paddocks away.
We think he wanted to be a part of the treat and attention action.
He is a "stunner" (good adjective?).
He almost looks like a porcelain statue.
Camparo the ranch's "David" (by Michelangelo)
Here is Vincento, happily accepting treats (that Camparo wants).
Vincento is a very big boy, not sure how many "hands"
And Silver, who has quite an interesting reputation, like trying to "climb" his way out of his paddock!
I think he got stuck and was helped down, not sure if that's totally accurate, but close, you get the idea.
Did you bake a file in that cake?
I think I'm going to have to make a Part 3, because I have some other things to share.
Hope you enjoy all 3 parts, eventually!
In between, remember, Life is short!
And, if you can share these stories, and books actually, more animals will be able to be loved and cared for.
By writing, we're hoping to open people's hearts to all beings, and for now, a beautiful area of the country, and some "beautiful" horses!
