On October 24th, I wrote a small piece about,
the Cost of Caring.
And on September 23rd my Mom outlined,
her personal Cost of Caring.
Little did we know that Murphy,
(that's him at the top of this post),
(who my mom Marybeth, co-sponsors,
at the Bergen County Horse Rescue),
has had major health issues over the past few months.
Erin Giannios,
the Director of Bergen County Horse Rescue,
told my Mom that going back to early summer,
Murphy started showing signs of fatigue.
Nothing overly obvious,
and also something very easily explained away,
by the warm temps and Murphy's size and maturity.
He's an 8 year old Irish Sport Draft Cross,
who was rescued from an auction kill/pen,
in Pennsylvania.
Yep, if you are unfamiliar,
horses are still being sold for their meat,
when the cost to care for them,
outweighs their usefulness.
He's 19.1 "hands" which means,
he's very tall,
and btw, he may still be growing,
(yep, they can do that).
Towards the end of the summer,
Murph started showing signs of slight lameness,
that turned into acute laminitis,
(painful and a debilitating condition of the hoof).
This is caused by inflammation of the sensitive laminae,
that bond the hoof wall to the coffin bone.

We feel certain Murph was trying to sooth his pain.
The early thoughts were that this was an abscess,
(apparently he's had this before).
Erin said that unfortunately,
abscesses take an extremely long time before resolving,
and there is not a whole lot that can be done,
other than Epsom salt soaks.
(Can't imagine a horse agreeing to this,
especially a giant horse like Murph!)
Apparently he did!
And, the abscesses were in both of his front hooves.
However, it gets worse!
After many Vet appointments,
with x-rays and every blood panel possible,
the infection traveled into Murph's bloodstream.
So, they brought on the antibiotics!
(Imagine the doses for a 1,000 lb. horse!!)
Yes, it goes on.
Then the poor guy showed signs of a very weak immune system.
Good Lord!
So, he needed MORE antibiotics!!

When Murph was down (literally), Erin was right beside him
Erin said that Murph,
is one strong horse,
with a Heart and will to match!
She feels he absolutely knew,
that they were doing the best to help him.
And, he is now thriving!
Erin said that Murph's treatment,
cost upwards of $6,000.
But that Murph is worth that tenfold.
We Love that.
When my Mom found out about Murph's medical issues,
(literally a few days ago),
she immediately scheduled,
a $1,000. payment towards his Vet bills.
Co-sponsoring is not like owning.
A $6,000. Vet bill,
on top of monthly food, shelter, and farrier fees,
is, A Lot, A Lot.
So, my Mom did what she was able to.
And if you would do what you are able to,
we sure would appreciate it.
Bergen County Horse Rescue,
our trusted non-profit rescue organization,
accepts all donations.
You can leave a note or comment when you donate.
Tell them if you'd like to contribute to Murphy's Vet bill,
or buy some hay or grain, or grooming items,
treats! (They do have an Amazon Wish List!)
No donation is too small because they do add up!
Writing as a new career for my Mom,
was always about hoping to generate money,
to help support the Love and care of animals.
And that's exactly what's happening at,
Bergen County Horse Rescue.
That's why we contribute.
Thanks so much!
Go Murph!
Keep growing and stay away from those abscesses!
Much Love and many thanks this Thanksgiving!
Maisy❤️ and Marybeth❤️
