July 31, 2026 Chief's Great Escape (and the Deep Clean That Followed)
That's Chief up top.
I've mentioned him before in my writings,
through Maisy.
Look at that face. Mwah❤️
That's the face of a happy boy!
He has just had his stall,
and outside area,
completely cleaned,
with fresh groundcover added
(extra fine pine shavings).
Sparkling clean, inside and outside!

Chief's living quarters were given a "deep clean",
by Wendy,
(she rides and cares for Chief twice a week),
and Jo,
who manages the care of all the horses,
at the Equestrian Center.
Jo says this will keep the flies down.
Horses are tormented by flies,
so keeping Chief's area clean,
will be a godsend.
This cleaning,
came on the heels (or hooves),
of Chief's Great Escape,
just a few nights before.
Jo found him in the morning,
of the next day,
grazing alongside little mini horse,
"Small Fry's" residence.
When Jo told me what had happened,
(the gate to Chief's outside run,
was probably unlocked),
I went right over to see him.
No kidding,
he looked like a million bucks!
I don't know what Chief did all night,
out on the ranch,
but whatever it was,
I'd say that freedom,
did him some good.
When I first met Chief,
probably 2 years ago,
he was living in a big paddock.
His area was right next to old man Max.
Max was nearly 40,
over 110 in human years!
I was brushing him weekly,
and giving him treats (Barn Bites).
Poor Chief would watch from the fence.
At the time,
I didn't know Chief or who he belonged to.
The general rule about horses is,
if you don't know them or their owner,
do not give them treats.
They may be on a special diet,
or their owner may only allow treats,
as a training tool.
So, I would apologize to Chief,
and go on my way.
I learned that Chief was owned by Kristen,
the ranch owner,
(she also owned Max).
At some point,
both Chief and Max,
were moved to a different area,
and I began to get to know Chief.
Stopping to say hello to Chief,
and give him treats,
became part of my ranch routine,
followed by brushing,
and even bodywork,
by my horsemanship teacher,
Donnis Thran.
Chief is a Senior himself,
and still works as a lesson horse.
Donnis says,
that Chief has learned,
to use his body efficiently over the years.
I think he's almost 80 in human years.
Once I started studying Equine Bodywork,
I have included Chief,
in my practice massages.
As to my Equine Bodyworker Externship,
the inch worm is still inching along.
I decided,
that I couldn't just keep doing,
massages and assessments,
when the paperwork,
has not been completed.
Assessments are filled out by hand,
massage sessions,
are put in a computer program.
So, I knuckled down,
and completed Sugar's massage report.
I had already sent Liz (Sugar's owner),
Sugar's assessment.
Now Sugar is ready for her 2nd massage.
The thing is,
not only do I have to identify areas of the body,
that need attention,
I also have to determine,
what sort of exercises and stretching,
would best benefit the horse.
HaHa!
I think Maisy once said,
"This horse course is no joke!"
She was right.
Not only do I have to know where,
on the horse to massage,
but also,
I have to recognize trouble spots,
and then do more studying,
as to how to help those troubled areas.
Phew!
It's A Lot A Lot.
But, it's very cool,
and interesting,
and kind of exciting,
since the program I am in,
is highly "rigorous",
requiring several hundred hours,
of anatomy and this externship.
I've also added,
viewing the video of our teacher,
doing the 12 sections of the massage,
we have to learn.
I figure,
if I watch that 20 more times,
I'll be able to ditch my index cards,
at some point.
Gosh, I'm probably boring you to death,
with all of this.
Oh, one more thing,
I also attended the Zoom Q & A ,
lead by the woman,
who will ultimately decide,
whether or not I get certified.
It was on Saturday.
It was the 2nd of her sessions,
for students of the Equinology course.
I loved it.
Well, enough for now.
I hope you are enjoying your summer!
Keep inching along,
in whatever your pursuits are!
Much Love,
MB❤️
